Mona Simpson's moving eulogy for her brother, Steve Jobs

Mona Simpson's moving eulogy for her brother, Steve Jobs -

The New York Times has published Mona Simpson's eulogy for her brother, Steve Jobs. Simpson delivered her eulogy during his memorial service on October 16 at the Memorial Church of Stanford University. In her remarks, she recalls her experience of his final days and hours, including his last words to his family.

Simpson's eulogy is both powerful and heartbreaking, and I won't cheapen it by clipping bits to include here. Go read the full piece at the New York Times. I'd argue that you'll learn just as much about what kind of person Steve Jobs was in his sister's moving eulogy as you will by reading Walter Isaacson's sprawling biography of him.

One recommendation: before you read Simpson's eulogy, grab a handkerchief. Unless you're carved out of wood, you're probably going to need it.

10 days with iPhone 4S: a personal review

10 days with iPhone 4S: a personal review -

Under normal circumstances, I would not be considered a target customer for the iPhone 4S. I bought the iPhone 4 on launch day. I was not up for renewal until late November.

Because of work commitments (look for the upcoming "Taking Your iPhone 4S to the Max" co-written with fellow TUAW bloggers), I paid the early upgrade penalty and received my iPhone 4S on October 14.

I've now spent 10 focused days with the iPhone 4S, exploring onboard features for technical coverage (I probably know a little more about how to make selections and share media in the Photo app than any normal person ought). The rest of the time I've been doing what the iPhone is meant to do: place phone calls, run errands, take family pictures and so forth.

Here's some extremely subjective feedback on my personal 4S experience during this time ...

Expanded California Apple Store to open Saturday

Expanded California Apple Store to open Saturday -

Apple is poised to expand its presence in California by re-opening the Victoria Gardens Store in Rancho Cucamonga this weekend. The Victoria Gardens store originally opened in October 2004 and was impressive for its time. It had 3,000 square feet of retail space and was packed full of G5 Towers, G5 iMacs, and eMacs when it first opened its doors seven years ago.

Now the store has a new location and has received an architectural facelift. The new and improved store has doubled its footprint and now boasts of 6,000 square feet of retail space. Its entrance has also doubled to 60-feet wide and is made of stone and glass instead of steel, a design change that reflects Apple's current retail store aesthetics.

The Victoria Gardens store will open this Saturday, October 22 at 10:00 a.m. PDT.

How to Manage Your iTunes Library

How to Manage Your iTunes Library -

All my iTunes songs are duplicated!

If there’s one thing iTunes is good at, it’s making a royal mess of your music library. Huge libraries are often crippled by multiple copies of the same albums or songs. There are two ways to deal with the clones.

If you have a small library, consider using iTunes’ duplicate finder, which is at least efficient at finding them. For libraries over 20 gigs or so, Rinse will be much faster.

The first is less precise, but it’s also free. From iTunes, go to File > Display Duplicates or hold Option and click Display Exact Duplicates. From there, you can delete duplicates from the list by holding Command and clicking the dupes to select them, then pressing Option-Delete to kick them out of your library. Unfortunately, the songs and artists are often intermingled with each other, which makes the process gruelingly slow if you’re dealing with large libraries.

Thankfully, third-party applications can make this dupe-nuking easier. If you’re not afraid to spend $40 on an iTunes utility, Rinse is an awesome tool that won’t just remove dupes but will also find missing cover art, correct genres, and fix misspellings. To use it, simply run the app and click Add Album Art, Find Duplicates, Fix Your Songs, or Organize Genres.

iOS 5, iCloud now available to all

iOS 5, iCloud now available to all -

Apple announced last week that iOS 5 and iCloud would be available Oct. 12, and as of around 10 a.m. PDT, both are indeed open to the general public. You can download iOS 5 for your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch by plugging it into your computer and checking for updates in iTunes. You can also sign up now for iCloud either via an iOS device with iOS 5 installed, or by updating your Mac to 10.7.2 using Software Update, and then accessing the iCloud section in System Preferences.

Apple TV users can also grab iOS 4.4 for Apple TV (2nd gen models) now, which allows you to use AirPlay Mirroring.

In addition to users who will be downloading iTunes 10.5, released yesterday, in order to be able to install iOS 5 on their devices, the amount of software flowing from Apple’s servers as users upgrade this morning will likely put a heavy strain on its backend infrastructure. Hopefully Apple’s new massive N.C. data center helps it keep up with demand, but don’t be surprised if you have trouble connecting or encounter download delays.

Both iOS 5 and iCloud represent major changes and additions to your Mac and iOS device experience, so we have extensive coverage of both planned for the rest of the day. Stay tuned as we explain various features and also take you through the process of setting many of them up.

In an interview with ABC, US President Obama said that Steve Jobs personally gave him an iPad 2 a couple of weeks before it was unveiled. In the picture above, the White House has confirmed the president is carrying an iPad 2. Not a bad perk of the job, if you ask me.
